Historic Hartford Walking Tour now available on city’s new website

The City of Hartford is pleased to announce the launch of its Historic Hartford Walking Tour, now available through the city’s newly designed website. This self-guided experience highlights significant sites in Hartford’s past, offering residents and visitors an engaging way to explore the city’s rich heritage.

The walking tour is enhanced by a series of narrated YouTube videos created by Hartford resident Grayson Cole, who brings local stories to life through thoughtful research and visual storytelling.

The tour includes a curated selection of landmark locations throughout downtown Hartford, complete with street addresses and historical background. Participants can walk the tour route at their own pace while accessing videos and information online or through mobile devices.

Two examples of the tour include:

  • The John C. Thomas House (415 Mulberry Street): Built in 1880, this two-story poplar-framed home was constructed by John C. Thomas, a prominent local businessman and saddlemaker. Today, the house serves as the Ohio County Museum, preserving the legacy of one of Hartford’s founding families.
  • The Ohio County Times-News Building (314 Main Street): The city’s long-standing newspaper traces its origins back to 1926 and has played a central role in chronicling Ohio County’s political and cultural history. The building continues to house the publication today.

“We’re excited to make Hartford’s history more accessible to everyone,” said event coordinator, Meredith Skaggs. “Thanks to Grayson Cole’s contributions and the new website platform, we now have a meaningful and easy way to connect with our past.”

The City invites residents, students, and tourists to explore the walking tour and take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about the stories that shaped Hartford.

The full series of videos can be accessed via the City of Hartford’s official YouTube channel.
